Relationship Counselling
- Has the current pandemic lock-down negatively affected your relationship?
- Have you lost the ability to communicate effectively within your relationship?
- Do you feel that your relationship has lost it's spark?
- Is your sex life suffering and you would like to talk about this as a couple?
- Has there been infidelity within your relationship?
- Has your chronic health issue impacted on your relationship?
- Do you have (or have had) an addiction that is impacting on your relationship?
- Anything else that you're are struggling with within your relationship?
Choosing a partner and spending your life with that partner is not easy and will involve a great deal of experiencing life's ups and downs together. Relationships are complex and can sometimes involve conflict, from small arguments and bickering here and there to constantly arguing and feeling consistently unhappy.
You may be able to identify with this and if you feel your relationship is suffering, you may have already tried to work it out together without external help. However, it can be really helpful to seek a professional third party to assist and this is where I can help.
Relationship counselling is a talking therapy for couples. Sessions with me will typically involve: -
- Exploring and improving communication between both parties;
- Identifying differences in perspectives between both parties on important issues such as, money, work, children, roles and sex and then exploring how the couple can work with these differences effectively;
- Resolve issues in relation to intimate elements of the relationship;
- Identify how some external factors may be impacting on the relationship e.g. family values brought into the relationship by both parties, lifestyle, religion, culture and so on.
Exploring specific issues that the couple would like to explore safely such as:
- different parental styles
- family conflict
- financial issues
- impact of attachment styles
- impact mental health or chronic health conditions
- infidelity
- loss and grief
- sex and physical intimacy
- substance misuse
- trust issues and jealousy
- work-related stress
Sometimes the couple don't wish to continue with the relationship and counselling can consist of exploring how to separate amicably and on good terms.
If you have had individual counselling before, then obviously relationship counselling is different as there are three people in the room. However, it does share the same process of confidentiality, providing an ethical and safe environment, and focusing on the needs and concerns of both parties within the couple.
My role will be to help facilitate change and resolution. I will not tell you what to do. I may offer suggestions of things you may wish to try such as tools or strategies, but it is ultimately each party's choice as to whether to utilise these. It will not involve me taking sides or forming an alliance with one person against the other within the couple. I will remain impartial and non-judgemental.
Impact of Chronic Health Conditions on Relationships
In addition to the above issues that I can help with, I also have a specialist interest in working with clients who are impacted by a chronic health condition.
Chronic illness can have a significant impact on couples such as: -
- Managing the daily challenges the chronic illness can have on the household
- Not seeing any way forward to a 'new normal' where the couple can appreciate the positive aspects of life and their relationship
- Adapting to the constant changes that a chronic illness can bring into the relationship
- Impact on the couple's sex life and physical intimacy
- The loss and grief the chronic illness has brought unwelcomed to the relationship
- The change of roles within a relationship that a chronic illness can bring
- The financial impact of a chronic illness on the relationship and household
- Impact on the couple's social life and social relationships.
I can help couples explore this in a safe, non-judgemental and empathic environment whereby both party's can feel free to explore the impact the health condition has had on them and subsequently their relationship.
